The Buddhist Council of Canada was originally active in the mid-1980s. Its former president, Suwanda Sugunasiri, has revived the organization and has broadcast this press release:
This is to bring to the attention of the Canadian Buddhist community as well as the Canadian public that the Buddhist Council of Canada has now been revived after a dormancy of more than a quarter century. Originally established as the Buddhist Federation of Toronto in 1982, the Objects of the Council remain the same:
a) To promote the Buddhadhamma according to the traditions of all the Schools of Buddhism, and
b) To promote co-operation among Buddhist Communities in Canada and elsewhere.
The Office-bearers are:
PRESIDENT: Prof. Suwanda H J Sugunasiri
VICE PRESIDENT: Prof. Veronique Tomaszewski
SECRETARY /TREASURER: Bryan Levman
This is also an invitation to the Buddhist community
- to become members of the Buddhist Council of Canada, as individuals or collectivities,
- to bring your ideas towards a vibrant Council, and to explore how best Buddhism can contribute towards a better Canada, and human happiness.
