August 9, Thursday at 7:30pm — Calling the Guru from Afar
Jamgön Kongtrul’s piercing supplication, Calling the Guru from Afar, has been chanted widely by practitioners of Tibetan Buddhism since its composition in the 1800s up until the present day. Invoking many of the greatest masters of India and Tibet, the prayer then points out some of the most common and dangerous faults that afflict dharma practitioners. From the practice of mind training, bodhichitta, and devotion, up to the nature of mind, Jamgön Kongtrul illuminates the pitfalls we often fall into and invokes the gurus’ blessings in order that we may become better practitioners. The prayer therefore contains many precious pieces of advice that can help us truly turn our minds to the dharma and make our dharma practice become the path.
