The University of Toronto has a growing program in Buddhism, Psychology and Mental Health. In conjunction with this initiative, the directors of the program are launching a peer-reviewed scholarly journal, with a working title of: “The International Journal for Buddhism and Psychology.”

Aims: To publish empirical research of a multidisciplinary nature demonstrating the application of the psychological insights found in Buddhism to the understanding and modification of human behavior. Perspectives from the entire range of psychological theory and Buddhist religious philosophy are encouraged.

Scope: Publishing original contributions describing clinical interventions, experimental studies, critical reviews, assessment and measurement tools, theoretical analyses, and case studies. The IJBP invites submissions from mental health professionals, academic scholars and Buddhist contemplatives.

Editor: Tony Toneatto, PhD

Assistant Editors: Henry Shiu, PhD; Scott Bishop, PhD; John Vervaeke, PhD

Managing Editor: Karma Yönten Gyatso, The Sumeru Press Inc.

As of this writing, the publishers are constituting themselves as a learned society and building their editorial board. The journal’s launch is projected for October 2010, to coincide with the Toronto visit of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and a conference the university will be hosting at that time.

The journal will launch in digital form as an e-journal using Open Journal System, an open source platform developed by a consortium of Canadian universities (of which U of T is one of the lead institutions in the project) under the rubric: The Public Knowledge Project (http://pkp.sfu.ca/). Sumeru’s role in the project is to provide the IJBP with a publishing platform and possible relationship with an international journal publisher, workflow templates and a graphic design “look.”
