We are pleased to present this translation of seven early texts from the proto-Tantric literature surrounding the esoteric forms of Avalokiteśvara which ultimately came to be associated with the six realms in Japan.
The collection includes:
- The Sūtra of the Dharaṇi Which Implores Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva to Dispel the Harmful Effects of Poison
- The Sūtra of the Vast, Perfect, Unhindered, Great, Compassionate Heart Dharaṇi of the Thousand-Armed, Thousand-Eyed Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva
- The Ritual Methods of Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva Cintamaṇi Recitations and The Ritual Methods of Offerings and Recitations for the Revelation of the Divine Powers of Noble Hayagriva, the Awesome Ferocious King
- The Miraculous Dharaṇi Sūtra of the Eleven-Faced Avalokiteśvara, as Taught by the Buddha
- The Sūtra of the Heart Dharaṇi of the Unfailing Rope
- The Sūtra of the Great, Extremely Pure Dharaṇi, the Heart of the Mother of Seven Hundred Million Buddhas, as Taught by the Buddha, Śakyamuni
- The Sūtra of the Secretly Stored Cintamaṇicakra Dharaṇi, the Miraculous Mantra, as Taught by Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva
These texts are presented in accessible English, with Sanskrit mantras and dharaṇis, and with an introduction and footnotes provided by the translators. The text also includes examples of Siddham script seed syllables associated with each form of Avalokiteśvara.
As a collection, these texts provide a window into the early Tantric traditions surrounding the bodhisattva, Avalokiteśvara, and the many ways that this bodhisattva, as well as her/his devotees, understood and expressed compassionate awareness and activity.
